Transport
We spend our life traveling the world by road, sea and air transporting our animals to one film set or another. Our first task is to make sure the animals travel and arrive in good condition and without signs of stress.
By road we have to choose vehicles that do not make animals travel sick. They have to have a good heating and air conditioning system. We have to carry a lot of equipment to cover the animals every need. If we have a breakdown we try to have a plan “B” normally a second vehicle to rescue us. We have to leave way before the normal time one would plan just in case of the unforeseeable delays.
This is all very much within our control. However when traveling by air many things can go wrong because we are in other peoples hands.
With our years of experience we often know more than the ticket desk or agency booking the tickets. Their job normally is dealing with people movement from one place to another. If left to these people things could go wrong. They give the wrong information. The consequence of this can be disastrous to a film company.
Most airlines are governed by the same rules BUT some airlines have a few rules of the own that can cause us problems that can jeopardize your production.
The problems we have transporting animals:
Some airlines will not take cats and dogs on the same plane because they are natural enemies.
Some have limits on the number of animals in one plane. Remember we may not be the only people traveling with animals.
Some planes do not have pressurized or heated holds. We have to check this beforehand.
The procedures when transportation animals by air.
There are two ways to transport animals by air. One is as CARGO this is very time consuming. Lots of paperwork, import/export veterinary inspections etc. Plus the animals must be delivered to the cargo warehouse 4 hours before and on arrival be collected from a cargo warehouse often many kilometers away. Need I say more?
For domestic animals it is normal to transport them as excess baggage.
